How Covid19 accelerated digital transformation of calibration labs, a quick retrospect from 2023

Updated: Feb 25

Unprecedented business conditions triggered unprecedented adoption of technology in calibration lab management.

Covid19 pandemic made the world realise the need and possibilities for more digitization. Calibration industry was no different. Year 2020 witnessed accelerated adoption of technology by the industry for process improvement and automation. This helped them survive the uncertain business conditions during the pandemic.

2020 started with uncertainties of unprecedented scale.

Labs struggled in the first quarter of 2020 when pandemic struck. As with all other sectors, calibration businesses also were clueless on how to react to the emerging crisis. Employees were confined to their homes. Factories and Facilities were locked down and the equipments which used to run for a minimum of 8 hours a day was shut down for days and months.

People wondered if the sky was about to fall. Thanks to technology it didn’t.

Cloud tech helped the labs to adapt

They realised that their current processes need to be changed to support people working from home. Only option before them was to adopt cloud based applications for calibration lab management. And they adopted.

Automation helped much. For example, automated certification processes helped labs to issue certificates without much manual intervention. Timeline reminders to customers about due dates helped both parties to manage time and resources efficiently. A section of their employees could work from home using such applications. Soon they adapted to the new normal.

Best year for Metquay

The change benefitted us. Q1 of 2020 was dull if not totally depressing from a business perspective. Situation changed from Q2 onwards and long story short, Metquay registered a record number of new customers in 2020. It’s clearly a reflection of labs wanting their processes to be cloud enabled. Our solution helped labs to save not less than US $60K per month. This improved their profitability by effective usage of time and resources.
